Symptoms and Characteristics of Down Syndrome
The symptoms of Down syndrome are present from birth. Some can even be detected while the child is still in the womb.
There are both physical and intellectual symptoms of Down Syndrome. Physical symptoms include a flattened nose and facial profile; low muscle tone; small head, ears, and mouth; upward slanting eyes; and wide, short hands with short fingers. People with Down syndrome are also more likely to acquire other health concerns such as heart defects.
Intellectual symptoms include a range of mild to moderate cognitive disabilities. People with Down syndrome can learn and understand the same things as other people, but usually at a slower rate. Depending on the severity of their cognitive disabilities, people with Down syndrome can still be active members of their communities.
