Treatment/Medication
Down syndrome is diagnosed in a few ways. Using ultrasounds and blood tests during the first or second trimester, it can be determined whether or not the developing baby has Down syndrome. After the baby is born the symptoms are present, so it is much easier to diagnose.
There is currently no cure for Down syndrome. However, the life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased significantly over the years. Down syndrome patients can be expected to live to 60, sometimes even older, depending on health conditions.
Educational programs can be used for children with learning disabilities. Therapists can help with emotional or social problems. There are also physical therapy programs to help build muscle tone.
Drugs can be used to help with dementia in Down syndrome patients, but these have not proven to be effective.
Centers like the Down Syndrome Research Center are working to prevent Down syndrome or find a cure for it, or at least a medication that can help with the symptoms.
